Funding for multi-agency project to reduce crime in Padgate

Cheshire’s police and crime commissioner is backing a community project in Padgate which reduces anti-social behaviour in the area.

David Keane has awarded a £1,000 grant from his Safer Communities Fund to Padgate Sports Club to fund regular drop-in sessions for young people and their families which aim to address issues in the area including criminal damage.

The project was set up in response to an increase in anti-social behaviour incidents in the local area which was having an impact on local residents, small businesses and the local library and high school.

A range of partners have come together to run the sessions at Fearnhead Cross Community Centre with leisure provider LiveWire providing sports activities and Warrington Police engaging with local residents to provide assurance and increase public confidence.

PCC David Keane said: “My Safer Communities Fund is there to empower local people to make their communities safer places to live.

“It’s clear to see the impact Padgate Sports Club is having on reducing anti-social behaviour in the local area which not only benefits young people, but also the wider community who have been blighted by issues in the past.”

Paul Flannery, LiveWire’s community sports development officer, added: “The sessions, attended by LiveWire staff and representatives from the police, are aimed at both developing community cohesion and helping to get your people in the area more active. We can also help signpost the young people to further opportunities that might be of use to them.

“We welcome parents and guardians to attend too – we have a range of healthy refreshments on offer as part of the scheme – and the sessions are shaped by those who attend, ensuring everyone is enjoying the sessions.”

Padgate Sports Club is one of 22 projects across Cheshire which has recently received Safer Communities Funding to support crime prevention or meet the objectives within the commissioner’s police and crime plan.
