Faisal Rashid MP meets with Government Minister to keep up pressure on Chapelford Health Centre

Faisal Rashid, MP for Warrington South, recently met with Health Minister Steve Brine in Westminster to discuss progress on Chapelford Health Centre.

The meeting follows Faisal’s recent question in the House of Commons about the shocking delays and failings that have beset the Chapelford Health Centre project.

Chapelford Health Centre was conceived around 20 years ago, ahead of the now developed Chapelford Urban Village. For more than 10 years the Chapelford Health Centre that serves this community has been operating out of a portacabin on a piece of waste ground while approval and funding for the permanent surgery on the reserved site had been sought.

Faisal has been working with the Chapelford and Old Hall councillors to keep up the pressure at both a local and national level. Faisal had taken the issue to right to the top of the NHS – raising concerns with the Chief Executive of NHS England, Sir Simon Stevens, and to Government, putting pressure on Health Ministers in Westminster to guarantee delivery of the new medical centre. Following Faisal’s question in Parliament last month it was announced that capital funding for the site had been approved.

Faisal’s productive meeting with the Health Minister revealed that there are only a few hurdles remaining to overcome before construction of the health centre can begin and there are high hopes this will happen in the coming weeks.  During the meeting the Health Minister committed to providing Faisal with regular updates on the medical centre’s progress.

Locally, Faisal will be arranging local meetings, with the Council and Warrington CCG, to help iron out the final issues.

After the meeting, Faisal said:

“I am pleased to hear that long-awaited progress has been made with Chapelford Health Centre and that we are a significant step closer to local residents finally having access to the GP facilities they were promised over 10 years ago.

“The temporary facility in Chapelford has been operating out of a portacabin on waste land for many years due to excessive delays and the failings of various NHS bodies involved in this project.  Residents rightly feel let down by the delays.

“I am very grateful to the local ward councillors, Rebecca Knowles, Steve Parish and Paul Warburton, for working closely with me on this important issue.

“I want to assure residents that we will not rest until the Health Centre has been completed and the doors are finally open to patients.”
